Malaysia’s air quality index, explained
What does Malaysia’s IPU mean?
IPU (Indeks Pencemar Udara), also called the Air Pollutant Index (API), describes air quality at a monitoring station. Lower values mean cleaner air. It is not a PM2.5 concentration or the US AQI.
How often are the readings updated?
DOE APIMS publishes hourly readings. MyAir checks for fresh data every five minutes. Always check the station update time in Malaysia Time (MYT); a refresh does not mean DOE has published a new reading.
Does a nearby station show the air at my exact location?
No. Each reading represents a monitoring station, and conditions may differ elsewhere. Nearby lookup finds the closest station within 150 km; it is not a measurement at your address.
What should I do when IPU is high?
Follow current DOE and Ministry of Health guidance, especially for children, older adults and people with heart or respiratory conditions. During unhealthy air, reduce strenuous outdoor activity. MyAir is an independent information tool, not medical advice or an official alert service.
